First Clinical Trials of Buteyko in North America

In 2000, the son of a wealthy Alberta family travelled to New York to learn the Buteyko Method for severe asthma. The results were so spectacular that his parents approached the University of Calgary about funding a major research project on Buteyko. Their donation of one million dollars led to the first clinical trial in North America at the Foothills Hospital, Calgary.

Results showed:

  •  Good Asthma control increased from 41% to 75%.
  •  Inhaled Cortico-steroids (ICS) reduction was 28%.
  •  Reliever Medication reduced by 74%
Percentage of subjects who were able to eliminate ICS. 18%
  •  Percentage of subjects who eliminated long-lasting relievers 19%.

I’ve been astonished and also very pleased with the excellent result. There is no disruption of their life at all by their disease (due to Buteyko): normal activities; not waking at night; not needing to use any reliever medications. It’s just great...75% control is about as good as anyone has got in any study of asthma. The neat thing about it is that it has no side effects. It’s very safe. The Buteyko technique certainly has been shown to be an important adjunct to treatment.”

"There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the
Buteyko Technique works,"
said Doctor Bob Cowie MD, Manager of Calgary Clinical Trial."The results of this study shows it is a wonderful adjunct to conventional treatment of Asthma. We had super results that no one else has been able to match even with the best medication."

Buteyko Clinical Trials

Buteyko is not a quick fix solution and does not claim to cure any condition. However, as breathing is the most fundamental function of staying alive, Buteyko therefore has a huge impact on our quality of health. Dr. Buteyko and his colleagues spent over 40 years of combined scientific and medical research into the Buteyko Breathing Method. The result is that the symptoms of over 150 chronic conditions such as Asthma, COPD, Snoring, Sleep Apnea, high blood pressure, etc, are alleviated and even eliminated with the Buteyko technique in Russia. At this time the hundreds of research projects are slowly in the process of being translated. Please see their list of conditions treated with Buteyko.

Note: Buteyko is not about throwing away medications but using them judiciously and properly. As symptoms disappear, the need for medications also is lessened. However, an accredited Buteyko Educator always instructs clients to consult their doctor before reducing medications.

Treatment of mast cells with carbon dioxide suppresses degranulation via a novel mechanism involving repression of increased calcium levels
Background:
Intranasal noninhaled delivery of carbon dioxide (CO) is efficacious in the symptomatic treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis. The goal of this study was to determine whether and how 100% CO inhibits mast cell degranulation, thereby possibly contributing to the reduction of symptoms in seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Conclusions:
Results from this study provide the first evidence of a unique regulatory mechanism by which CO inhibits mast cell degranulation and histamine release by repressing stimulated increases in intracellular calcium. Thus, our data provide a plausible explanation for the reported therapeutic benefit of noninhaled intranasal delivery of 100% CO to treat allergic rhinitis.

18 patients with mild to moderate asthma were taught the Buteyko method by a video and compared with 18 control subjects (Opat et al, 2000). The study found a significant improvement in quality of life and significant reduction in inhaled steroid use.

1990, Shevchenko's Central Hospital, Kiev, Ukraine

Results:
- 50 patients with radiation sickness due to Chernobyl's nuclear plant disaster.
- 82% patients had considerable improvement in blood analysis, cardiovascular parameters (blood pressure, pulse, etc.), work of the digestive system, and reduction in medication.
- No cases of side effects or complications due to the breathing exercises were reported.

52 children (34 in-patients and 18 out-patients; 3-15 years old) with regular asthma attacks (once per day or more); 41 of them had pneumonia, 27 rhinitis, 36 chronic tonsillitis. All had problems with breathing through the nose, palpitations, and were broncho-dilator users.

- In 1-5 days the patients were able to stop the attacks, cough, blocked nose, and wheezing, using the method. Observations in 1-3 months
- cessation of serious attacks or a total disappearance of the symptoms in 83%
- some improvement in 17%.
- Their average CP increased from 4 to 30 sec
- CO2 from 25 to 36 mm Hg.
- Higher blood concentrations of IgA, IgM, IgG, and IgE
- Blood pressure normalized
- Forced expiratory volume raised over 5 times.
